Adrienne Rogers IBS New York April 22-24th

Adrienne Rogers   National Technical Training Director

With more than 20 years of industry experience, Adrienne is currently a senior colorist at Cutler Salon in New York City as well as the owner of Hush Salon in Philadelphia. She divides her time between the locations catering to a full book of savvy clients. Adrienne is frequently called upon to color New York’s up & coming models. Her credits include: Best Colorist by Allure Magazine, Behind the Chair, American Salon, Modern Salon, Glamour, and Elle Girl, plus numerous makeovers for other magazines and TV, including Bravo’s Make me a Supermodel and the Daily Buzz.

Adrienne is also the National Technical Training Director for Product Club. In this role, she will be responsible for developing new techniques that are in line with current fashion trends and incorporating them into Product Club’s class formats. She travels extensively teaching advanced coloring techniques in classroom demonstrations and hands-on workshops. Adrienne is a talented salon colorist whose friendly & approachable style makes her a sought out educator & presenter.

This year there are two classes for IBS that I am teaching. I am teaching The Art of Highlighting and Celebrating Hair Color as an Art Form.
The Art of Highlighting is a series of DVD’s that Product Club Produced last year. Our main mission has been to give ideas to Colorists, and to inspire them to evolve them into new designs that they’ve come up with. The Art of Highlighting Class is variations that I’ve come up with using jumping off points from our DVD collections. I’m really focused on beautiful dimension in hair color and a melted quality of highlights moving through the hair.
The Celebrating Hair Color as an Art Form is more of that plus some interesting comparisons of technique in hair color and art and design.

What’s in for Spring/Summer 2012?
This Spring/Summer is all about color in fashion and I think there is a return of that in hair color too. For quite a while there has been a quietness in the tonal qualities of fashion. I have a wardrobe that’s predominantly grey.
This season is pushing me to shop for more vibrant clothes. I believe hair is in the same boat and I am evolving my clients into beautiful washes of color over their highlights. I’m feeling translucent cherries, ambers, and warm wood tones. I believe these will be a gorgeous compliment to the colorful tones in fashion this season.
It’s all about balance and the complete look.
If a client leans toward a very strong look and is consistent with that I believe their hair color can be stronger too. As a beauty consultant it is important that we as stylists help steer our clients to a cohesive look that they can maintain on a daily basis. I want my client’s look to work for them every day. To be able to stand up to evenings out as well as a trip to the grocery store without ever looking out of place.

Who inspires you?

I am inspired by many things for the looks I create. I love art. Abstract, illustration and photography are my favorites. Anyone who knows me knows I am obsessed with interior design as well. There are lots principles in the world of art and design that apply to esthetics. I write things down that appeal to me and see how they can apply to what I’m doing in hair color.
My colleagues are a never ending supply of inspiration as well. We’re so wildly dorky at work talking formula and placement. I love that.
I love that in our industry I am challenged everyday by the client as well I am inspired and pushed by them to continue to evolve their look and keep them current in fashion and feeling good about themselves. It is never a good thing to be too sedentary in your client’s color. They feel cheated and so do I if I lose my edge. After 23 years of doing this I still sweat it out trying to please people. It’s a great victory every time I can pull it off. This industry challenges me and rewards me in a constant cycle and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Chicago <3 America's Beauty Show

America’s Beauty Show in Chicago was awesome! We all had such a good time despite the insane crowds and traffic! Everyone who entered the booth had great questions and seemed genuinely impressed with Lisa McAullife’s “Art of Highlighting” class. : )

I really liked this venue. We were actually exposed to daylight, which is rare in a convention center! Also, I enjoyed the interesting artwork they displayed throughout the center. However, the food was still pretty gross :p

Our mic was making the most annoying noise ever. Adam and Nick were able to fix it thankfully!

For this this show I wanted to share my thoughts on the “crescent panel” and “switchback sets”. These two techniques combined make one sexy head of hair! You can find these techniques on our “Art of highlighting” DVD set.

 

Lisa was an awesome roomie! I love her calm demeanor and friendly approach to education. She is someone to admire. In her classroom she taught “Raylight- Lowlights” and a technique she created called “Corrugated color”. Very beautiful results!

A trip to Chicago would not have been complete without a delicious deep dish pizza! It was pretty much like heaven in my mouth. Oh how we all love eating!

Lisa McAuliffe at America’s Beauty Show 3.5.12

Lisa McAuliffe will be teaching two classes at America’s Beauty Show this coming weekend in Chicago – Sunday, March 4 at 10-11:30am and Monday, March 5 at 10-11:30am.  Both classes will be held in room W187B . She will be teaching Product Club’s The Art of Highlighting.

  Creative interpretations of highlighting techniques from Product Club’s Art of Highlighting Collection will free you from your old foiling methods. This class includes haircoloring techniques that are adaptations of techniques found on the Art of Highlighting DVDs.   Express yourself, open up your mind and get inspired to be creative again!

 
What you can expect to learn in Lisa’s seminar…
  • The three Ts of hair color tools, trends, and technique. Learn why Product Club’s tools will enhance your career as a colorist, how trends evolve & where they are going, and modern hair color techniques that are useful in real life scenarios.
  • Lisa’s adaptation of Raylights called Raylight Lowlights.
  • Corrugated color, a one step techniques that creates density and soft veils of color. It’s imperfect, less mechanical, and creates beautiful ribbons of color. This technique can be used with highlights or lowlights.
Who is Lisa McAuliffe?
 
Lisa took her first job in the hair industry at the age of 14 in her hometown of Ottawa, Canada.  It didn’t take long for her to go from sweeping the floor to applying colors and assisting the busy colorists she worked for.  In her early 20’s Lisa followed her passion and moved her burgeoning career to Toronto, Canada. Once there, she dug in and took every class she could get her hands on. She immediately immersed herself in the philosophies of Schwarzkopf, Toni & Guy, L’Oreal, and Vidal Sassoon.  After accepting a position in a well known uptown salon, Lisa quickly became the fastest growing stylist/colorist and soon developed a reputation for her meticulous attention to detail. By 2003 Lisa was shooting her creative work and entering it into competitions.  Her peers began to take notice in 2004 when she was nominated for the first time by the Canadian Contessa awards as a semi-finalist in the category of “New Comer of the Year”.  In September 2005 her work was featured on the cover of “Salon Magazine”, Canada’s largest trade magazine for the hair and beauty industry.  In 2007 she was once again nominated as a semi finalist in the Contessa awards this time for “Canadian Hairstylist of the Year”, “Ontario Hairstylist of the Year” and “Multicultural Hairstylist of the year”.  Her largest accomplishment came in 2008 when she was nominated by the very prestigious NAHAs (North American Hairstyling Awards) as a finalist in the category of “North American Haircolorist of the Year”.  Since then her work has appeared in “Colorist Magazine” and on many trade websites. In the fall of 2011 she joined the reputable team at “The Alcorn Salon.”

Lisa enjoys travelling with Product Club to various trade shows around North America showcasing her original and very unique techniques.  Her Product Club artistic team members have been quoted by describing her as “having a crisp vision of modern haircolor that is effortlessly communicated,” as well as “being very unique in her approach to color scenarios that we all face every day…  she is extremely inspirational.”

P.C. How long have you been in the industry?
Lisa: 16 years.
 
P.C. What do you love about the industry?
Lisa: I love making people feel good about themselves and the fact that a few highlights will brighten their entire day. We have the ability to create all day long and earn a great living while living our passion.
 
P.C.  Who is your biggest inspiration as a colorist?
Lisa:  Adrienne Rodgers, her take on hair color is so real. There’s no fluff and everything she does is adaptable and useful in the salon.
 

Spring 2012 hair color

This spring you can expect to see many golden hues everywhere. Hair color will have the look of gold jewelry. Rose gold will especially be popular. In spirit of Spring 2012 I took Nina from dark/cool brown with red highlights to an all over lighter rose gold. This is just the beginning of her Spring 2012 hair color makeover. To protect the integrity of her hair we will be reaching her ideal color in the next two appointments.

As you can see in her after photo there are still remnants of the red, which actually worked in our favor. The small amount of red blended well with the lighter pieces creating a “rosy gold”.

When making an extreme change like this be sure to…

-Make an appointment with a professional colorist

– Clarify the hair before coloring

– Purchase a shampoo and conditioner filled with proteins like  Davines Melu

– Apply a deep conditioner 1-2x a week

– Make an appointment for a haircut. *Be prepared to lose some length. The ends of your hair will have gone through some trauma.

– Prebook your next appointment for about 8 weeks.

In case you were wondering this is the inspiration photo we were working from….

In 8 weeks I will be coloring Nina’s hair using Product Club Color Acessories technique called, “Skylighting”. The technique was developed by Laurie Edwards. The Art of Highlighting Volume 2 “Go Fresco!” with Laurie Edwards.    Skylighting is perfect for shifting your single process color clients into more adventurous color. It allows you to keep the base color darker but brighten it up a bit. Skylighting results in a rooty base with some diffused highlights and variations of depth that gradually transition to bright, fresh ends.  Fresh ends is the key term here. Nina’s hair has been colored many times therefore her ends are extremely saturated. Skylighting will allow us to reverse this issue and give her color that most people yearn for!

Sweet home Alabama!

Birmingham, Alabama is full of such kind people! I really enjoyed my time working the Product Club booth. It’s always interesting to see what people want to buy and wanting to learn in different areas of the country. Alabama and I were lucky enough to experience the new Foil Assistant. Um, yeah baby this thing is awesome! I was foiling the lovely Debra, and all I had to do was push down the lever and POP there was my precut foil. It was shiny, smooth, and leopard print just the way I like it!

 

I have to say I learned a lot from our educator Lori on this trip. She explained to her classes that the ombre effect in pink, yes pink, is very popular in Colorado right now. I had not heard of this trend yet living in St. Louis. Sure enough, I opened this month’s issue of In Style magazine and there it was, Lauren Conrad with pastel ends. It’s completely awesome to hear it from our team first! –Kristen Linares

Discover St. Louis… my home!

St. Louis Discover show was my first time working in the Product Club booth. I was so nervous to have so many eyes on me! Normally I was found backstage in Orlando doing the makeup, which was way less intimidating. Thankfully, Rachel gave me some pointers and I had the best time! To see the wheels turning in each stylists mind while discussing technique and professionalism was so rewarding. I felt as if I was really able to bring something to the table. I’m thrilled to be a part of a company that motivates our industry in such a fashion forward & professional way. It’s all about how you present yourself to your guest. Beautiful tools create beautiful hair as do educated stylist. Rock on St. Louis!

The Art of Highlighting in Lombard, IL

The Art of Highlighting DVD set was a hit in Lombard! Each DVD has two techniques. In the entire collection there are a total of eight techniques! Stylists were excited when I explained to them that you can actually use a combination of these techniques all on one guest for a customized look. How professional does that make you look?
